HANSARD, GLEN & IRGLOVA, MARKE/The Swell Season

Frames front man Hansard has teamed up with classically trained Czech vocalist
and pianist, Irglova to produce this album of affecting songs and compositions.
From straight songs to piano instrumentals, "The Swell Season" affords an insight
into a whole other side of Glen/The Frames, as well as offering a perfect
introduction to this very talented newcomer. The record takes its name from author
Josef Skvorecky's book of the same name. Set in Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia, the
story centers on one man's love of music and his pursuit of unattainable women as
a country comes unglued. Like the book, the record deals with the pains and
hopes of those struggling to make sense of their lives.
     

     




BARRY, TODD /From Heaven

Fresh from his knockout bongo performance on Flight Of The Conchords, Todd
releases his third full-length comedy album, this time touching on hard-hitting
issues, from The Container Store to famous bass players, in his inimitable
high-energy style. He's appeared on Letterman, Conan O'Brien, Carson Daly, Jimmy
Kimmel Live, Comedy Central's Friar's Roast of Chevy Chase, "Space Ghost Coast
To Coast", and in his own two "Comedy Central Presents" specials. He also has
numerous acting credits, has done cartoon voice work, and has done shows with
The New Pornographers, Yo La Tengo, The Shins, Aimee Mann, They Might Be
Giants, and Luna. Check out his previous releases, "Falling Off The Bone" and
"Medium Energy", and look for him on tour.
     

  



BON IVER /For Emma, Forever Ago

Pronounced "bohn eevair; French for "good winter" and spelled wrong
deliberately. This debut is centered around a particular aesthetic; Justin Vernon,
the primary force behind Bon Iver, moved to a remote cabin in the woods of
Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter, alone for three months. This
solitary time fed a bold, uninhibited new musical focus. All his personal trouble, lack
of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss, and guilt that had been stockpiled
over the past six years was suddenly purged into song. The NY Times called this
record "irresistible", and it was given a "Recommeded" rating by Pitchfork. RIYL:

STORY OF THE YEAR /The Black Swan

This St. Louis-bred five piece's Epitaph debut is an artistic triumph in every sense.
The beloved, million-selling band's third studio album is their finest, building on the
strength of past accomplishments. Known for their kinetic live shows and
ridiculously catchy songs, Story Of The Year have always been famously ballsy in
their mixing of glossy production, big rock hooks, and honeyed melodies with
searing metal riffs and intense screaming. The band has garnered a passionate
following, thanks in large part to lead singer Dan Marsala's signature vocal style
and heartfelt lyrics.
